Minnesota Moon
04:14
|
|||
She was 21 when she came to stay
My sweetest one from so far away
She came alone by sea and rail
She seemed so strong but her strength did fail, so...
Minnesota Moon shine down on me
From your great lake to your great prairie
Your cold's got a hold of the soul that I seek, so
Minnesota Moon shine down on me
We were married on the first of June
in a clapboard church at the stroke of noon.
And, before God, I said to my wife
that I'd love her true for the rest of her life, so...
Minnesota Moon shine down on me...
Then we moved out to the mining camp,
and every morning took me down the ramp.
But in our bed...every night,
She loved me true and held me tight, so...
Minnesota Moon shine down on me...
It was in September that we knew
that by the spring our first child was due.
And, through the winter, as mother do
both in love and joy she grew, so
Minnesota Moon shine down on me...
It was dark at night when I got home from the mine,
and my true love I could not find,
But in the distance heard our newborn's cries
and found her mother with death in her eyes, so
Minnesota Moon shine down on me...
She was buried on the first of June
in a clapboard box at the stroke of noon.
But no more can I mourn her charms,
for I must care for our babe in arms, so
Minnesota Moon shine down on me...

Westbound Train
03:20
|
|||
All of my life I've been on the wrong track,
Two stops forward and four stops back.
Asking the captain which way to go,
Ask him again and he still won't know.
There's storm clouds on the horizon.
Shelter's scarce and and the pressure's rising.
Trying to get eastward on a westbound train
Trying to get dry in a driving rain
Trying to stay crazy without going insane
Trying to get eastward on a westbound train
I'm digging in gutters, begging for change.
People must think I'm some kind of strange.
But I don't know, and I don't care,
So long as I can make my fare.
'Cuz I can feel storms a' coming
I got to be on the next train running.
Tie me to the rails
Skies are turning green
Everything I've tried and failed,
So make it fast and make it clean

Tree
03:06
|
|||
I was the tallest thing around
I grew up from the dirty ground,
Not even thinking I would do so.
But now I cannot eat the light.
It's like the day's mixed with the night.
My leaves turn brown, they turn brown, in the summer.
How do the little creatures grow?
What are the secrets that they know,
that keep 'em reaching for the sky (sweet by and by)
My branches fall down to the earth,
but what are dead branches worth?
They're barely good for burning.
It's been so long since I've grown,
and they pull all the seeds I've sown.
I was here first, here first...nobody ever mentions.
I feel myself cracking
when the cold winds come smacking.
All the birds have stopped snacking in my empty boughs.
Used to get secrets from my friends.
We sent them through our root ends.
We liked to talk about the springtime.
But now I do not get a word.
I've love to know what they've heard.
I dig and bend, I dig and bend to try to reach them.
I feel my strength sapping
When the cold winds come snapping
All the birds have stopped napping in my empty boughs.

Waves
05:18
|
|||
Lighthouse keeper on a distant shore,
spends his hours walking back and forth.
Watching and waiting and hoping to find,
that light through the nighttime can save lost souls...
Lifeboat captain on a raging sea,
at the mercy of the swells and elements.
Watching and waiting and hoping at last,
That all will survive when the storms move past...
We move like waves and waves on the ocean,
setting tidal moves and hurricanes into motion?
Hiding the currents that set it all into motion.
If you watch closely, you'll see the moon orbit us all.
Drinking from the ocean that's eating at the landfall.
It pushes us along, all her sons, and her daughters.
Back to the eternal embrace of the water.

So Long Gone
04:52
|
|||
You said, you'd be back someday.
But I am waiting. I will be waiting always.
I know that you're gone.
And when you're gone, you're really gone.
Even if it's wrong.
I said all sorts of things - some lies.
Now I can't look in your eyes, knowing what I've left behind.
You know that I'm gone.
And when I'm gone, I'm really gone.
Even if it's wrong.

Hype City
02:12
|
|||
The sound of the city's messing with my mind
I think I've got to go.
A hundred different people asking for my time,
I think I've got to go
So pack your bags country boy,
you know it's time to roam.
Pack your bags country boy,
The nights of the city are bringing your down
The hype of the city is dragging you down
But look at you pretty people in the afterglow
I might want to stay.
I think of all the places I'll never know,
Still I might want to stay
Go on pack your bags country boy,
You know it's time to roam
Pack your bags country boy...
I spent all last year drinking beer with my friends
and I don't want to stop.
Life should be a party til the day it ends,
and I don't want to stop
So leave your bags country boy
Look how far you've roamed
Leave your bags country boy
The nights of the city are calling you home
The lights of the city are shining you home

Get Back Home
02:00
|
|||
I've been travelling all night long
I've been singing the same sad song
I've been up to my same old tricks
I've been doing everything for kicks
I've been down the road to wrong
And I may be too far gone
But I've got to get back home
I think I may have lost my mind
All the good time's left behind
Lived and left 'em with my youth
I can tell you that's the truth.
Now I'm smoking myself blind,
Makes the way home hard to find
Now I've got to get back home...
I've been saying I love you
But I don't think that I do
Why'd I let you in my head,
All to kick you outta bed?
Hope you feel the same way too
One more lay and one more through
Now I've got to get back home
Home is where I know what's done and where I count the cost
of everything I know I've won and everything I've lost...
I've been travelling all night long,
I've been singing the same sad song.
Now I've got to get back home.

Three Little Words
02:03
|
|||
Three impossible words, but with you I find them so easy.
When you whisper them back I get the feeling that you would never leave me.
You're steady and ready to hold me each night.
In the shadows I found a light leading me home.
I had a bad dream.
Of course I did.
We all do.
I woke in fear that you were not by my side, and decided I would never leave you.
Feeling steady and ready to hold you each night.
In the shadows I'll keep a light leading you home.

Highway
04:01
|
|||
Countryside goes rolling by
Every day I'm killing time.
Waiting for the next town to roll through.
Under blue skies under clouds,
When I'm up or when I'm down.
Trying to keep my needle pointed true.
Spinning rubber on the blacktop.
Haven't tried but know I can't stop.
The road could kill me and I wouldn't mind.
Under fog banks under sun.
Always listening for the motor's hum.
There's no better life I hope to find.
The highway runs in ribbons to the sea.
Straight black line back to the sky.
You're waiting for your invitation from me,
But I forgot to wave goodbye.
Sometimes engines get replaced.
Memories the years erase.
All along I've been here on my own.
Under flags that I've let go.
Now I know that I can't get back home.
I'm bound to ramble on all alone.
The highway arcs and curves like a bow.
Shooting arrows off to fly.
Where I've gone you would give anything to know
'Cause I forgot to wave goodbye.
